To become Board Certified in a specialty area, an attorney must have:
- Been licensed to practice law for at least five years
- Attended continuing education seminars
- Been evaluated by fellow lawyers and judges
- Passed a 6-hour written examination
- Devoted a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years
- Handled a wide variety of matters in the area to demonstrate experience and involvement; for Certification in Civil Trial Law, this requires that during each of the 3 years immediately preceding application, the lawyer devoted a minimum of 35% of their time practicing civil trial law in Texas, AND
- The attornery must have tried a minimum of 20 contested civil cases involving actual damages in controversy of at least $25,000. Of this number of cases tried and submitted for review, at least 7 must be jury cases conducted by the attorney as lead counsel, that were decided by the judge or jury; No more than 6 can be personal injury cases and no more than 6 can be family law cases.
